Emotional and physical ties did wear a person down, leave them vulnerable to manipulation, and so he tried to avoid them to the best of his ability; there's a good reason only a handful of people in the world outside Celestial Being knew his name. But at the same time, he's not morally opposed to forming connections, bonds with someone, as Mello seems to be. If it happens, fine. If it doesn't, that's also fine. He doesn't bother Mello as he goes rummaging, lets him do his own thing, but he is surprised when he returns with what are, in his opinion, some very impressive weapons. ]
