HMD meme

HMD

It's that time finally! Here's our How's My Driving? post. This sitewide meme will go up on the 20th of every month and it's encouraged that everyone post! Please post a list of your current in-game characters as a reference for other members to use for comments or critique.

Remember to keep it civil. Outright flaming will not be tolerated and we will deal with any hostile comments as soon as possible. Critique should be constructive. Offer ways a player can improve their characters, solve any problems you might have, etc. rather than just telling them they're horrible with no examples or pointers.

Likewise, this isn't a love meme. It's great to tell someone you think they're doing a good job or you love playing with them! Just give reasons for why you think they're awesome or what they're doing well. We're not discouraging positive comments. Love is great, but so is hearing why you are so you know what to keep doing.

Anon comments are enabled and IP logging is off for those who'd prefer a little anonymity, but please don't abuse this feature to be rude to other players.

If anything comes up, please visit the concerns page to let us know or contact us through any of the other various ways listed.

Critting the Signless is a bit of a tricky proposition, because this is a bit of a YMMV issue given that his characterisation hasn't been explicitly spelled out. Consider these more ideas to consider rather than hardcore 'you must do this' sort of crit.

I think you play the Signless a but too soft and gentle. Yes, he's more sympathetic and empathic than the average troll, but remember that he's had to survive in that society. He can't afford to show much weakness, because others wouldn't respect him for it, and that would be counter-productive to trying to convince them of his ideal of what he thinks the society should be. It might be helpful to go look at Kankri's behaviour in the canon, because while it was stated that Signless acted with more maturity (and less insufferability) that him, his personality should give you a bit more to work with on this angle. Kankri believed that he had the right idea about all the issues pervading Troll society, which lead to him lecturing and pushing his ideas onto other people, overriding them with the sheer QUANTITY of his arguments. Though Signless shouldn't be quite that bad, I'd still like to see more passion in him, because after all, he's lived in a society that would have constantly ridiculed his beliefs. He would have had to fight, to stand strong, even just to get people to hear him out.

And basically, I don't really see anything of Kankri in Signless, which probably shouldn't be the case, because they are, after all, the same person, and that's the only really solid characterisation you have to draw from.

I see what you're saying? But a lot of that I see him having grown out off, having made a lot of mistakes in the beginning because he thought his way is right and will work, but then doesn't because trolls are trolls, so he has to learn and adapt and grow to get where he is now. He knows how to fight and he will if he has too, and he'd preach about defending you and yours, just don't instigate things needlessly. I don't see him and Kankri really being much alike at all. At least not anymore. Signless is older and has witness and actually a lot of horrible things that Kankri never did.

Kankri is the guy that sees something horrible on the internet and writes long ass essays about why it's bad without knowing the full scope of things. He says Signless incited a war when it was actually the Handmaid's fault. He's not actually a rebel leader or a military guy, he's troll jesus. He wanted to change the heart of the world, not beat it into submission. So Kankri obviously didn't look into things too deeply despite having the ability to, because he tends to nitpick at small details rather than look at the big picture. I have Signless look at the big picture first.

It states in canon that Signless only preached in secret to those who were willing to listen, unlike Kankri who tries to choke everyone to death by shoving his beliefs down their throats whether they want it or not. He's used to having to hid, so he's not going to leap into any spotlights and make any huge passionate speeches and draw attention to himself. It's not his style. He wants to actually figure out what they're up against before making any moves, so he's laying low.

He wants to start small and try to build community that will be willing to work together, since everything seems really disjointed right now. I'm planning on having him and the others hold a picnic or something like that where people can come together, and he'll do more talking there. Though I see him less monologues and dissertations like Kankri and more sermons and storytelling, something easier to listen to and understand.

Don't worry about length. :) Thanks your sharing the bits and pieces of your headcanon. It does make it a little easier to interpret how you're playing, and in this case, there's really no way to say that one way is more valid than any other since there's really nothing concrete to work from here so thank you for the explanation.

I'd still say, for someone who's meant to be 'troll jesus', it would be nice to see him rounded out a little with more flaws. If you look at any Troll in the canon with any characterization, all of them, Alpha or Beta verse, has some outstanding quirk that fleshes them out (positively or negatively). Porrim's feminism stance, Arenea's know-it-all attitude, Karkat's crabbiness, etc. Which isn't to say all trolls suck, but in comparison to that, your Signless feels very...flat, I guess. I just sort of feel that his niceness feels a bit bland in the face of what other members of his race have been shown to offer in canon. Using Kankri as a base would make it feel less like the Signless is a depth-less ideal, which is all you have to work from.

...Which sounds a bit harsher than I mean it. :|a Again, this is just discussion, because where Signless is concerned, we are stabbing around in the dark a bit and your interpretation above seems valid. I'm not discouraging you to play him, I'd just really like to see more from him.

I see what you mean. I haven't actually been playing him for very long in general which i'm sure has a lot to do with it. For a short time I'd played him from where he was dying on the irons, so that mentality wass a lot different from how I'm playing him now.

There are some flaws I've been working with, but those who'd really know at this point are probably just Disciple and Psiionic. Like overworking himself and sleeplessness because his mind is always running, being short tempered at times and getting frustrated when he's tired. I think his biggest flaw could actually be his drive. Trolls tend to get obsessive over things, and he'd work himself into the ground if he didn't have people looking out for him, get so exhausted he starts making stupid mistakes. He gives so much of himself to everyone else that he forgets about himself sometimes.

He hasn't been in many conversations/situations yet for those things to really show up. Though if you're following the log with Joscelin it might show up more, because he's acting way different than the other time they spoke, and he's going to be intent on trying to unprogram him somehow, even though he probably won't want it.

So yeah, I undersand what you're saying! I think it'll start to even out more once I've had him get into more shenanigans, since he hasn't had a whole super lot to do yet and I haven't been playing him for very long. I'm hoping for him to actually be able to debate ideas and things with other people, where a lot more of that passion and idealism will shine through.
